Early intervention in health settings for men using intimate partner violence

Existing help seeking interventions for men who use intimate partner violence (IPV) are not tailored specifically to community and health settings. There is a need for tailored interventions in health settings for voluntary men who are motivated to make changes to their behaviour.

In this study, we will explore how trained GPs can access the support they need through the I-ENGAGE model, to deliver the BETTER MAN tool, a web-based healthy relationship tool which aims to increase men’s early engagement with help-seeking to ultimately reduce use of IPV.

I-ENGAGE is a model in primary care working with men who use violence. It was developed in consultation with GPs and men who use IPV.

The model aims to:

  • Identify men who use violence through GP training.

  • Engage men through primary care

  • Enable access to interactive technological tools for both GPs and male patients to use in partnership or individually.

  • Create greater collaboration between primary care and local services.

  • Establish ongoing support for GPs and their male patients through training and resources.
